ISO 14000
The ISO 14000 environmental management system is an evolving general set of standards developed to provide businesses with the structure to manage environmental impacts and disciplines.
Target Audience;
ISO 1400 can be applied by all businesses and organizations (private and public) regardless of size and activity with relative benefits for all. It is a means to exceed legal requirements, to implement an integrated environmental management system.
What are the benefits:
Certification under an environmental management system can provide the following benefits:
a) Improving the public image and reputation of the business due to its practical environmental awareness
b) Positive response from stakeholders such as consumers, residents of the surrounding area, public authorities, investors
c) Harmonization with the requirements of the business sector
d) The successful implementation of another quality standard (e.g. ISO 9001) makes the adoption of ISO 14000 the natural continuation, since they can function as a single system of management and compliance with legislation and improving the environmental awareness of businesses.
What is the certification process:
The certification process includes two parts.
a) the establishment of the quality standard and
b) its certification by a Certification Body
The company that wishes to be certified with a quality standard must work with a quality consultant who will guide it in applying the requirements of the quality standard.
A large number of Certification Bodies have been accredited by the National Accreditation System (ENSS) to issue quality certificates to businesses.
When the process is completed, i.e. the quality system is implemented, the Certification Body is asked to judge whether the company complies with the legislative requirements related to food safety, to inspect the logistical infrastructure and to evaluate the overall implementation of the safety management system food.
If the result of the evaluation is positive then the quality certificate is issued by the Certification Body. If discrepancies are detected, the company makes the required corrections and is re-evaluated by the Certification Body.
The certificate is valid for three years provided that the requirements of the ISO 14000 standard will be met and this compliance will be confirmed by the Certification Body with annual assessments.
How long does it take to get a business certified:
The time required for installation and certification is related to the size of the company, the number of employees, the interventions that may be required to be made to the company's infrastructure (buildings, equipment, etc.) and any unforeseen factors. The primary requirement is the existence of an operating license or possible legal exemption from issuance. In small businesses that do not require major changes in the logistical infrastructure and meet the legal requirements, the time ranges from 1 to 4 weeks.
